It's official! Enzymic Hydrolysis is best of the best. The United Utilities Blackburn sludge quality improvement project (LIFE05 ENV/UK/000124 MAD but better) has been evaluated as one of the 22 Best LIFE Environment projects of the 90 that finished in 2008. It has been further evaluated by the Member States as being one of the "Best of the Best" projects. An award ceremony for will be held on the 24th of June in Brussels at the Green Week, 14.00 - 16.00 in the Charlemagne Building (see below for address) where the "Best of the Best" projects will make a short presentation of their results. United Utilities has applied for international patents on a new sewage treatment process that helps the environment while saving time and money. Scientists at United Utilities say it is a breakthrough in sustainability that is exciting the industry in the UK and overseas. After the treatment, sewage sludge meets the highest standards for disposal to land. Already tried at works in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and Bromborough, Wirral, the treatment will also be installed soon at Crewe and Blackburn. The process uses no more power than traditional treatment and produces far more renewable energy in the form of methane gas.The gas is used to power the treatment plant and any residue can be converted into electricity for public use. United Utilities believes it could contribute to national targets for power from renewable sources.Their wastewater experts discovered the process, enzymic hydrolysis, while examining ways to meet higher government standards on the quality of sludge that can be used as agricultural fertiliser. |

The 2007 International Energy Globe Awards (the World Awards for Sustainability) has been awarded to United Utilities for the ‘MAD but better’ LIFE project. The Awards have been presented annually since 1999 to recognise projects that 'make careful and economical use of resources and employ alternative energy sources’. An international jury, including members from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, now judged the 2007 awards which attracted over 850 entries from projects in 109 different countries and an innovative LIFE-Environment project has been announced as the UK’s national winner for 2007. |

Monsal has been awarded the contract to supply the advanced digestion technology for Southern Water at Goddards Green and for Anglian Water at Cambridge sludge treatment centre, two of the UK leading water utilities. These are the first project of its type to be awarded in AMP4 (Asset Management Plan 4) and demonstrates the shift in this investment cycle from traditional single stage digestion to more robust multi stage biological processes in the UK. Both advanced digestion facilities will incorporate the patented United Utilities Hydrolysis process. Monsal are the development partner and exclusive licensee for the process in the UK. Integration of pre-treatment technology which optimise hydrolysis and acidification reactions are gaining favour with UK water utilities. 3 of the 10 water utilities have now committed to investment in this technology with Monsal with additional projects under development later this year. |
